[00:00:00] Does your romantic relationship partner support you enough? Can a partner provide too much support? Could both have negative consequences for your relationship? University of Iowa psychologists conducted a study of 100 recently married couples, first time for both partners, assessing the provided levels of partner support such as emotional praise, encouragement, helping, advice giving, and the resulting impact on relationship satisfaction and intimacy. Over the first five years of marriage. They found that when individuals gave too little support, their partners reported lower levels of relationship satisfaction and intimacy. However, over support led to a decrease in the perceived quality of support provided, leading to lower levels of intimacy and relationship satisfaction. Thus, moderate levels of support are associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction and intimacy. While it is important to be there for your partner, it is also important to not overdo it. Thats challenging. Thus, it is essential for your relationships thriving to help each other but not take over. Ask your partner what type of support they need and how much help they want. Then provide that. Communicate openly and honestly. Respect each other's boundaries. Doing this, you can build a stronger, more satisfying relationship.
